Intentionality is an engaging effort that drives purpose and action. To successfully affect change in an organization whose aim is to ensure true diversity, equity and inclusion for all of its constituents, there must be a fundamental belief, and intent, top down, and bottom up to successfully achieve the work. Oftentimes diversity work will cause organizations to roll up their sleeves, dig deep into its code of conduct with a hope-filled goal to fully embrace what is just and right. Intentionality is somewhat different. Intentionality begins with a personal shift in thinking to include a focused, concerted, reinforced effort which leads to greater organizational success with completed, intended outcomes. Intentionality is the responsibility of diversity leaders within the halls of higher education to impart theory, practice and proven pedagogy, producing change amongst administrators, faculty, staff and students. Diversity leaders, across business ventures, health agencies and industries, must possess a duty-bound mindset; an intent that enhances wholesome, purposeful and concrete strategies. Adding intentionality within diversity efforts ensures a personal intent. Intentionality not only creates a stronger environment of inclusion, it allows the workplace to foster a deeper sense of belonging with a personal contribution, not just for some, but for all.
